When we started the 2017 year at the L.A office, we wanted to make sure we gave back to our community by getting involved with a local non-profit.

After speaking to a few non-profits in our area, we landed on 826LA. Their mission is to help kids develop their creative and expository writing skills. We had "love at first sight" feelings when we met them. The idea of using creativity to help develop writing skills was right up our alley.

826LA invited us to help run their field trips program, which gives under-resourced schools an opportunity to bring a class into the 826LA space and create a book. We take on a variety of roles throughout the day from illustrating, brainstorming, spell-checking and more. At the end of the field trip, each student goes home with a copy of the book they helped to write.

Our latest field trip was with Ms. Yee’s second grade class of Broadway Elementary. Together, we wrote ‘Journey to Wormtopia: Chica and Tiger’s Volcanic Adventure’, a story about a robotic chicken named Chica.

Within a year, 826LA serves over 9,000 students through free programming and publishes over 200 books. 99% of teachers reported that students brought back new excitement to writing after the field trips.

For us, it’s an incredible experience to see students jump out of their seats, with a huge smile, to grab the final book. We loved working with the students and putting our skills at the service of a bigger purpose.
